Redesigning the core creative canvas for real-time AI video generation

Redesigning the core creative canvas for real-time AI video generation

Daydream Scope is an open-source desktop application for real-time AI video creation, built for VJs, live performers, installation artists, and creative technologists. At its heart is a node-based workflow editor — the canvas where users build, connect, and run live AI pipelines.

The existing editor worked, but barely felt like Daydream. It was cluttered, visually archaic, and disconnected from the brand's identity as a sleek, forward-thinking creative tool. As the product grew and the community expanded, the gap between what Scope promised and what the editor delivered became impossible to ignore.

Retrospective

Retrospective

Tailoring the tool to experts didn't mean abandoning everyone else — it meant finding a better way to bring them along. Working closely with creative technology educators, we developed a suite of documentation and tutorials designed to take anyone from curious to capable. Clear, approachable, and written with the same visual sensibility as the product itself — the goal was to make the learning experience feel like an extension of Scope, not an afterthought bolted on beside it.

The result was a tool with a high ceiling and a navigable floor. Experts could move fast. Newcomers had a genuine path in. The redesigned editor stripped away the clutter, tightened the visual language, and brought the interface in line with Daydream's identity — sleek, expressive, and built for a new creative medium.

What had felt archaic now felt considered. What had felt cluttered now felt purposeful. And for the first time, opening the workflow editor felt like opening Daydream.

Daydream scope has recently pulled back into closed beta as we gather user feedback and work on improving the product. Please email me at freyabuison@gmail.com for more inquiries!
